조지포먼이 더욱 부각이 되었던 것은, 당대 최고의 스워머였던 조 프레이저가 최강이라 여겨졌던 알리를 상대로 판정까지가는 명승부끝에 승리하였었다. 그런데 조지포먼은 조 프레이저와의 경기 2판 모두 압도적 기량차이로 초반에 승리를 하였기 때문이다.

천방지축 망나니였던 타이슨도 커스 다마토를 친아버지와 같이 따랐고 전형적 스워머 스타일의 조 프레이저가 슬러거 스타일인 조지 포먼에게 1~2라운드 내내 샌드백 맞듯이 두들겨맞고 패배 당하는 모습을 몇번이고 돌려봤을테니 타이슨도 자신의 불리함을 알고 있었을 것이다.

추측성의 이야기이긴 하나 많은 사람들이 고개를 끄덕이는 그 둘이 싸우지 않은 이유라고 할 수 있다.

조지포먼은 전성기 후 복싱계를 복귀했다가 다시 은퇴한다

조 프레이저와의 2차전 이후 이른 나이에 은퇴를 하게 되는데 결정적인 사건은 바로

지미 영이라는 신예 복서에게 지고나서 라커룸에서 심장마비로 사망할뻔 한 사고가 벌어진다. 

조지포먼은 그때 영적인 체험을 하였다고 하여 기독교인으로써의 삶을 살아가려했는데 돈벌이는 없고 젊었을때 벌어둔 돈을 흥청망청써대며 결국 돈이 떨어지자 10년 후인 39살의 나이에 링으로 돌아온다.

1~2년만 쉬어도 무뎌지는게 스포츠판인데 무려 10년을 운동을 하지않은 조지 포먼이 

39살의 몸으로 링으로 돌아오자 많은 전문가들이 비난했다. 복싱은 피지컬이 우선인 스포츠이며 당시 헤비급에는 괴물들이 우글 거렸기 때문이다.

그런데 20대 창창한 헤비급 신예들을 40대 중년아재가 나타나 뚝배기를 깨기 시작했다. 조지 포먼은 KO 퍼레이드를 벌이면서 상대를 쓰러뜨리고 연승가도달렸고 놀랍게도 에반더 홀리필드와 WBA, WBC, IBF 메이저 3기구 통합 챔피언벨트를 두고 대결을 벌이게 된다.

이때 조지포먼의 나이는 무려 43살이었다. 결국 홀리필드에게는 패배하지만 43살의 노장이 3기구 통합 챔피언을 상대로 12라운드를 버텼다는 사실은 믿을 수 없는 사건임에 틀림없다.

조지 포먼은 2년동안 노력하여 다시 도전하지만 패배를 하였고 3번째 도전만에 에반더 홀리필드를 꺾는다 그리고 WBA, IBF 해비급 챔피언 자리에 오른 마이클 무어러를 상대로 10라운드 내내 맞다가 기적적 KO승으로 챔피언 자리에 오르게 된다. 그때 그의 나이가 47세였으니 현실판 록키를 뛰어넘는 영화같은 이야기를 그가 만들어 낸다.

조지 포먼은 그후 각종 광고에도 출연하고 성공학 강사가 되어 강의를 다닌다.

또한 그릴 사업을 시작해서 복싱때보다 더 많은 돈을 벌었다고 한다.
